Welcome to 2025

Well it's been another trip around the sun, so time to start things over and see what this year brings.

On the technical side of things there are a lot of cool things showing up but it almost feels like most of the things that i'm into on the technical side of things are just sitting waiting for something else to happen.

There have been some interesting things coming up, Intel's second round of GPU's look promising, and the pricing on the 5070 that nVidia just announced seems like it's a promising step in teh right direction for GPU pricing. That being said I don't see anything that's come out in the last couple of years that really makes me want to upgrade my gaming machine. It's an AM4 system built back in 2017 or so and it's still running everything that I throw at it without breaking a sweat.

The MacBook Pro that i'm running is less than a year old, and there's nothing in the M4's that makes them a interesting upgrade from the M3 system that I'm running right now.

It feels like we are waiting for some fundamental shift in hardware, but I don't know where it's going to come from.

It kind of feels like we are due for something on the processor side of things, but it feels like there's enough going on that we may be looking at a shift away from discrete CPU's and more into systems on a chip where upgrades just don't happen unless you swap out the entire device.

Apple's already there with their hardware given that none of their systems are currently upgradable in any form for most users. While some laptops on the windows side are still upgradable there are a increasing number that are using soldered RAM and storage on the logic board leaving them in a state where you get what you purchased and that's it.

And yes, I'm well aware of what Framework is doing with their systems, and I think that's a great approach but a lot of consumers just won't care about upgradeability in their laptops over time.

Anyhow, since I'm happy with my current hardware I'm content to sit back and watch things as they develop. I'm sure that it's going to be a interesting year.
